Alto Paraíso de Goiás draws travelers with its beauty, its cultural diversity set in nature, its simplicity and its lush scenery. It is a magical place with more than 120 cataloged waterfalls of various sizes and crystal-clear waters in many colors. A place of ecotourism and sports for those who want adventure. An uplifting place where spirituality pulses, for those seeking to turn inward. Or simply a place of peace and wellness experiences for those who just want to rest.
Alto Paraíso holds the memory of gold, of farms and of the migrations that transformed the Chapada. In the eighteenth century, mining used the labor of enslaved people. Later, wheat, coffee and cattle ranching shaped the rural economy. In the twentieth century, families from the Northeast, Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul added new activities and ways of life to the region.
The name Veadeiros is linked to the presence of deer and to the activity of hunters who traded in hides. An 1836 map already recorded the “Chapada dos Viadeiros”. The municipality was created as Veadeiros in 1953 and received the name Alto Paraíso de Goiás in 1963.
The town is also known for its diversity of spiritual and community initiatives. Bona Espero, founded in 1957 and linked to Esperanto, Cidade da Fraternidade, Cúpulas de Saint Germain, Rumo ao Sol, Cavaleiros de Maytréia and experiences inspired by Osho are part of this story. The arrival of artists, therapists and people interested in living closer to nature broadened this diversity.
Crystals, spirituality, art and community life are part of the local identity. Arrange visits and activities at retreat spaces in advance. For the day-to-day of your trip, Alto Paraíso offers restaurants, shops and services for exploring different parts of the Chapada.
