Pedra Escrita is an archaeological site in the area beyond Segredo, with a reference of about twelve kilometers from São Jorge and a walk of approximately eight hundred meters along Córrego Buritirana. Although intermittent, the stream holds pockets of water during the dry season, an important feature for the region’s former inhabitants. The rock surface and its position in the landscape help explain the use of shelters and surfaces by populations predating colonial settlement.

There are 221 paintings, with geometric, human and animal forms, in red, yellow and black tones. Linking the red color to iron oxides is consistent with mineral pigments, but does not, on its own, identify the composition of all the figures.

The site’s cultural value does not depend on a promotional age. Do not touch, wet, scratch, clean or try to enhance the drawings. Visit only with authorization from the person in charge and appropriate guiding. The location is kept as a broad reference, without coordinates for sensitive panels. Do not confuse the site with Curicaca, another archaeological site promoted by the municipality.

Getting there by car

A site on Fazenda Oreádes, next to the São Jorge–Colinas road. Ask the person in charge for authorized entry, parking and guidance; the condition of the side road for cars is not confirmed.
